California Greenworks is a non-profit that strives to improve the quality of life in the urban communities across South Los Angeles. Their goal is to advocate open space preservation in urban communities, restoration of waterways, and community beautification that promotes sustainable urbanism.
The proposed site on Gage Street will become their home base for local outreach as well as a staging zone for their urban landscape interventions. Shipping containers become the building blocks of the site, housing the design studio, offices, and restrooms. A second level terrace overlooks a private demonstration garden, while a series of more public gardens face the street.
The site (currently vacant) is very visible and aims to be a focal point for the neighborhood. The massing is organized to house public classes, meetings and info sessions of different sizes. The overall design aims to give California Greenworks a flexible space that can evolve alongside their community outreach efforts.
